I predominantly work with clay, textiles, wood, and metal to explore and communicate ideas. Rooted in my Haitian and Québécois heritage, my practice serves as both a personal narrative and a reflection of Black culture and heritage more broadly. Through reliefs, figures, and other forms, my art examines existence, society, community, spirituality, symbolism, and the connections that bind us all. I portray humans in narratives untethered to time, presenting life as a cyclical journey. Symbolism plays a central role in my practice, weaving my creations together and opening layered conversations within them. I am particularly interested in time—specifically how ancestry manifests within us and influences our bodies. In my work, this often appears through gestures of dance and movement. This exploration extends to themes of resilience, viewed through the lens of history. By engaging with the search for freedom across time, my work reflects on fragments of history that radiate powerful energies of both trauma and radical joy. These dualities live within many communities, including my own heritage. My process is grounded in experimenting with local materials such as clay, ash, and seaweed, highlighting the interconnections between land, body, and history. I approach these materials instinctively, guided by their tactile qualities, adding my perspective to inherited traditions. I consider the possibility that these works may one day exist as relics of human experience. My creative process exists in symbiosis with emotions, significant life moments, recurring actions, and the rhythms of popular discourse. At its core, my practice embodies a desire to build community and nurture meaningful connections. ______________________________________________________ Je m’appelle Cassi Camille, et je suis une artiste interdisciplinaire, sculptrice et céramiste. Je travaille principalement l’argile, le textile, le bois et le métal afin d’explorer et de transmettre des idées. Ancrée dans mes héritages haïtien et québécois, ma pratique constitue à la fois un récit personnel et une réflexion sur la culture et l’héritage noirs dans leur ensemble. À travers des reliefs, des figures et d’autres formes, mon art interroge l’existence, la société, la communauté, la spiritualité, le symbolisme et les liens qui nous unissent. Je représente l’humain dans des récits détachés du temps, où la vie se présente comme un cycle. Le symbolisme occupe une place centrale dans ma démarche, tissant mes créations entre elles et ouvrant des conversations à plusieurs niveaux. Je m’intéresse particulièrement au temps — notamment à la manière dont l’ancestralité se manifeste en nous et influence nos corps. Dans mon travail, cela apparaît souvent à travers des gestes de danse et de mouvement. Cette recherche s’étend à des thèmes de résilience, envisagés à travers le prisme de l’histoire. En abordant la quête de liberté à travers les époques, mon œuvre réfléchit à des fragments d’histoire qui dégagent des énergies puissantes, faites à la fois de traumatismes et de joies radicales. Ces dualités traversent de nombreuses communautés, y compris la mienne. Mon processus se fonde également sur l’expérimentation de matériaux locaux tels que l’argile, la cendre et les algues marines, afin de mettre en lumière les interconnexions entre la terre, le corps et l’histoire. J’aborde ces matières de manière instinctive, guidée par leur qualité tactile, tout en y ajoutant ma propre perspective héritée des traditions. J’envisage la possibilité que mes œuvres deviennent un jour des reliques de l’expérience humaine. Mon processus créatif existe en symbiose avec mes émotions, les moments significatifs de la vie, les actions récurrentes et les rythmes du discours populaire.
